Do you prefer standard or customized to your needs?

The PIM - Product Information Management - is the central system for collecting and managing all product-related information. Standardized PIM systems perform well as long as the product ranges are not too large and complex.
One system - different requirements

Putting together and maintaining product assortments is far from simple - it is a complex interplay of suppliers, procurement processes, target groups, trends and analyses. The product information collected typically fall into two categories: data needed for procurement and logistics, and data used for sales. The requirements of purchasing and sales teams, however, often differ significantly.

Does your PIM match your product assortment?

The product ranges of major players in e-commerce are extensive, but also highly diverse. In practice, we see that a standard PIM works well for around 80 percent of the product range, but not for the last 20 percent. Yet these 20 percent are often precisely the part that is important for market positioning. This often results in time-consuming and cost-intensive adjustments to the standard PIM software.

Why PIM projects often fail

Standard PIM systems perform well, but they do have their limits. Customizing such a system comes with pitfalls: the further you move away from the standard, the more difficult and costly it can be to keep the system fit for the future. We have also seen individual PIM developments fail since the system became too large and too complex.

"Sales is often more willing to experiment than other departments - can your PIM system support that level of flexibility?"

A divided approach as a solution for more efficiency and speed

Depending on your requirements, PIM projects can be split into several areas: a procurement-oriented system dedicated to product onboarding - a task that can typically be handled by standard PIM systems. Another area is the sales-oriented preparation of data ensuring that customers are presented with products in the best possible way.

Pre-PIM and post-PIM - decoupled, not divided

With extensions - such as pre-PIM and post-PIM - large and diverse product assortments overcome the limitations of standard PIM systems. Thanks to systems that are decoupled, but not separated, even the "complicated" 20 percent of the product range can be easily integrated into the system. neuland develops pre-PIM and post-PIM solutions for the optimal connection and preparation of data - drawing on experience from successful customer projects.

"The complexity of specialized assortments is often underestimated and quickly pushes standardized systems to their limits."
